We began GAPS on June 13th, 2017. When that date came back around in 2018 we decided we should celebrate the anniversary. We saw a great deal of healing in that first year and a celebration felt important. This journey belonged to each of us in a different way.
I was the cook. Evelyn was the encourager, helper, soother (she would rub Raleigh’s legs or arms when they itched), cheerleader, and confidant. Sam was the steady support I needed to keep going every day. And Raleigh was the patient.
Thus, GAPS-Aversary was born.
Raleigh’s healing journey from severe eczema, food sensitivities, asthma and edema has been an epic adventure with many highs and lows. We are still adventuring as he continues to gingerly move off GAPS and wade into the waters of a Weston A Price – style diet. This is primarily how I cook and we eat, anyway.
He’s come such a long way…
Raleigh is now 11. He is strong, healthy, funny, sensitive and kind. He is skilled at sports and eating – I swear his legs are hollow!
This journey has defined his life thus far. He doesn’t remember life before – he doesn’t remember being so sick. We look at pictures from time-to-time. I usually cry. It has been an epic battle for the ages – a battle to regain his health, and, I daresay, we’ve been victorious. The Lord has been gracious to us on this journey.
To celebrate, we usually make Raleigh’s favorite foods. This year he has requested pancakes (recipe found under the GAPS Recipes tab) and Bolognese (recipe found in GAPS Comfort). Both kids get a gift, a treat, and we try and do something fun. It’s important to remember and celebrate just how far we’ve come.
So, if you are in the middle of your journey, or perhaps have yet to begin — know that healing can happen. It will happen. Give it time. Keep showing up. Keep fighting. Be sure to celebrate the victories along the way!
