Home Remedies For Cold and Flu Season: Tonics

I have a few go-to drinks for specific ailments. A cold and flu remedy drink that my husband calls stinky feet tea, a homemade Pedialyte that I used when my kids were little and a detox dip that I would make for Raleigh while on the GAPS diet to support him in detoxing.

Stinky Feet Tea – This is great for anytime during the winter, especially if you feel sickness coming on or are sick. It earned it’s name because of the apple cider vinegar.

8-10 ounces of filtered water

1/8 teaspoon organic cinnamon

1 tsp organic, raw honey

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (ACV)

Bring the water to just under a boil. Combine all other ingredients in a mug. Pour water in and stir well.

I typically try not to get too close to a boil since that will kill off more of the beneficial bacteria and enzymes in the honey and ACV.

Detox Dip

1 stalk of broccoli, chopped

1 pack of watercress

1 cup parsley

Salt

1-2 cups Meat Stock or bone broth or water

1-2 Tablespoons animal fat of choice

Directions:

In a pot add all ingredients except salt and fat. Cook on a low simmer until everything is soft. Puree or blend in a blender, drain off liquid. Add salt to taste and fat. Stir to incorporate fat.

My son loved to eat it by the spoonful. You can use it like a dip and eat it with crackers or chips.

Homemade Pedialyte

Store bought Pedialyte is a toxic mess. Here are three options that work just the same for the body.

  1. 1 Quart filtered water, 2 Tablespoons coconut sugar, 1/2 tsp salt. Warm the water, add the sugar and salt. Refrigerate.
  2. Juice: 6 stalks of celery, 1 apple, 1 lemon.
  3. In a glass of filtered water add 1/2 tsp sea salt, 1/2 tsp baking soda, the juice of one lemon and 1 tsp of maple syrup.
