Home Remedies for Cold and Flu Season: Supplements

I really like food to do most of the work when it comes to boosting my immune system. Supplements are expensive and often a crap-shoot. There is no regulation in the supplement industry so you have to be really careful who you trust. I have vetted a lot of companies over the years and the ones I share below I purchase from and trust.

But if you’re looking to use food as medicine as best you can I would make sure you’re consuming soups with meat stock and/or bone broth often, lots of healthy animal fats, fermented foods and limiting sugar consumption. Managing stress as best as you can, plus sleep. All of this will go a long way to boost your immune system without supplements.

Supplements We Take and Recommend:

  1. Cod Liver Oil – Probably top of my list. CLO is full of vitamin A&D and fantastic for the winter months to boost vitamin D levels. Ideally, you want to pair D with K2 for most optimal absorption. This is my favorite brand and they have an option with butter – butter contains K2.
  2. Emu Oil – This is to follow up with the CLO. If you cannot do dairy, emu oil is a fantastic option for K2. This is my favorite brand. Side note: Emu oil is also very soothing for eczema. I used it on my son, Raleigh for a long time in the beginning of our GAPS journey.
  3. Vitamin C – Well known vitamin to take or increase when you feel sickness coming on. This is my favorite brand.
  4. Zinc – I find we typically need to boost our zinc when were getting sick. I like this one.
  5. GarlicBest company for garlic pills, cream, throat spray, etc. HIGHLY recommend.

Other supplements I like and will rotate in and out depending on our needs:

  1. Turmeric Love this brand.
  2. Dessicated LiverRadiant Life has a few good options as well as Perfect Supplements. Liver is nature’s multivitamin. It’s a great thing to get into your diet.
  3. MagnesiumWe take this daily.
  4. Just Thrive makes a nice K2 + D3

Finally, I will say, you cannot out-supplement a bad diet. So if you are eating poorly these things won’t be able to do much for you. I recommend them as a nice boost to a pretty on-point diet.
